Project #3

Project #3

250 Word Draft

To start working on this project, the first thing I did was simply think about my time at UNE so far. Thinking about my expectations for college, orientation, the first weeks of school, and how I feel now. I had to do this before I went back and looked at post-class reflections and weekly reflections so I can make connections from now to my past self. When I did go back and view my past reflections, I started at the beginning. It is a great benefit to my project that I recorded many of my weekly reflections, including the first one. I listened to my first weekly reflection from the very beginning of my college experience, and right away I knew it would be a great resource for me to use in my podcast. I have decided that I am mostly going to reference the weekly reflections that I recorded, excluding some that I typed unless I think there is something super important to include. The second weekly reflection that I listened to was from Week 5. Going from the first week straight to the fifth is a good way to quickly emphasize some of the changes that I went through in my mindset and attitude towards college. It also includes an example of learning and growth after completing my first college essay. I realized in week five that I had some things to improve on in my work ethic, specifically regarding procrastination and time management.

Before recording the podcast on my computer, I have made sure that I have a program that is compatible with my computer and will allow me to record with clear audio. I will use the program called OBS to record my audio, I have some experience with this program so I should be able to record it smoothly with little issues. If I happen to have difficulties, a friend of mine is very knowledgeable about the program, even more so than me, so I have let them know that I may need their help in the near future. A challenge I am anticipating running into is during the editing process of the podcast. I am planning on using clips from my previous weekly reflection recordings, so I will be challenged to find a way to include those recordings in my podcast. I don’t think this should be too much of a barrier for me. I have plenty of time and resources including digi-space here at UNE, my friends who have experience editing videos and podcasts, and of course the internet and YouTube videos.

The process of my podcast is coming along well, and most of the outlining of it is complete. I have planned out most of what I want to discuss in a google document as a guide during my podcast. It is not supposed to be a script, as I want the podcast to flow and sound more like a conversation than a speech. The first practice run of the podcast should be done within the next few days.

I am beginning to record the first run of my podcast, I expect to run into some issues during my first attempt, so I expect to have to record a second version that will be more polished than the first time. I planned on including clips from some of my weekly reflection recordings from earlier in the semester. I have recordings from week 1, week 5, and week 9 that I am planning to include in my podcast. To get the audio from each of those, I am setting them at the correct time of the clip so I can press play during the recording of my podcast and the correct part of my reflection will be recorded. I have set up all three of the different recordings so I don’t have to worry about finding the clip while I’m live and recording.

After the first recording of my podcast, I ran into an issue with how it sounded when I listened back to it. The sound on the clips that I was playing was too quiet, and it would be impossible for anyone trying to listen to understand what I was saying in those clips. I was glad that I found this issue and that I took the time to replay the audio to make sure everything was in order. To fix this problem, I had to tinker with the OBS application on my computer that I used to record my podcast so that the clips I played were louder and easier to hear. Once I figured out this small issue, I recorded the podcast again. This time, I had a clearer understanding of what I wanted to say and the points I wanted to make. I was able to cut 3 minutes of time off from the first recording, making the podcast around 10 minutes rather than 13 which I think would have been a bit too long. I didn’t want the podcast to drag on, so I was happy to improve on that in my second recording.

Overall, the process of creating this podcast as the final project for the GUST class was relatively smooth. There were a few moments in which I felt a little overwhelmed and wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to finish on time with something that I was happy with. But I think that the end result is something that I can say I put my best effort into. I could have done a better job managing my time during the creation of this podcast, but I think the way that I did manage my time was a great improvement over previous projects not only in this class but in my other classes as well. It was fun for me to revisit the earlier weeks and months of this semester and realize how much has changed, and how much I have changed and learned in such a short period of time. I am happy to say that I was in a GUST class in my first semester of college after doing the research for this podcast. I was able to understand all of the different things that we did in class and how I have been set up to succeed in the rest of my college career because of this final comprehensive project.
