Apprentice Book
Choice Reflection:
I chose to represent A&P in my Apprentice Book because the story stuck out to me among the three we read the most. I thought immediately about how I could represent the two different realities in my artist book. The dream reality of Sammy’s mind is where he pictures himself with the girls and out of work, and then the actual reality of what happened. The story grabbed my attention because of its simplicity as an actual story, but its deeper meaning and message that you realize after reading the entire piece. I chose a few quotes to place in my apprentice book that represent the two realities that we are described. Two of them are quotes that bring us and Sammy back to reality and the disappointment of the situation. While the others show Sammy’s young and dumb thoughts about the girls and how they will react to and perceive him. I was guided by those quotes when workshopping and creating this book. The divide between the two worlds was interesting to me and provided me with the base and main idea for the book.
Bookmaking Reflection:
When making this book, I wanted a way to represent the divide between the two realities of Sammy’s world that are outlined. To do this, I thought it would be creative and smart to mark the divide with a drawing of the divider often used at grocery stores to separate the foods of different customers. I drew the divide across the entire book to showcase how throughout the entire story Sammy does not fully understand how what he is thinking and feeling is not based in reality. It takes him the entire story to realize right at the end that he should not have gotten lost in a dream world that he had made up about girls he had only known about for a few minutes. I chose to put the quotes from the story on two different sides of the divider and in different colors. This was to differentiate between the two outcomes. The one where Sammy is living his dream with the girls and the one that actually happens. I also wrote the “dream” quotes in a gold-like color to signify how it’s the reality Sammy is wishing for. The other quotes are in a darker color because it is the depressing actuality Sammy finds himself in.
